Four Types of Writing Assignments I’m Gaga Over
I ghostwrite a lot of informational blog articles for clients. I enjoy that work and am thankful for it.
However, what I’ve found I REALLY enjoy — and believe I excel at (B.S. in Communications with a concentration in Journalism in the house!) — is helping businesses tell stories.
What kinds of stories, you ask?
- Case Studies – Telling the story of how my client’s solutions help make their customers’ lives or businesses better. This involves gathering details from my client and interviewing their customer to discover: 1) What the customer’s situation looked like before engaging my client; 2) What solutions my client provided to the customer; 3) What the customer’s situation looks like now (i.e., the benefits they’ve experienced and the results they’ve achieved); and 4) What the customer values most about working my client. These stories are typically organized in a “Challenges, Solution, Results” format.
- Brand Stories – Forming a narrative around the history of a client and their business, what has inspired and shaped them along the way, how they’ve evolved, and where they’re headed.
- Product Stories – Creating a narrative that connects emotionally with my client’s audience. This kind of story brings their product or service to life by not only describing its unique features and functionality but also by telling how the product or service has transformed some aspect of their customer’s life.
- Impact Stories – Driving awareness of and interest in a cause or movement to impel readers to take action. These narratives paint a picture of a widespread need or problem, describe how an organization or initiative is facilitating change, and encourage audience involvement to become a part of the solution.
I LOVE putting my writing chops and intuitive ability to “connect the dots” to work on all of the above. In a world where many businesses are increasingly tempted to use AI for much of their informational content, I believe the assignments I mentioned will always need the human perspective, person-to-person interaction, and nuanced craftsmanship only a real human writer can deliver.
To the clients who have been bringing me into more and more of these types of assignments…THANK YOU! You’ve re-ignited a creative spark in me — one that I sometimes lose sight of when writing informational content day in and day out.
